Retired Player & Number

Ryan Malone is a former professional ice hockey forward and former Upper St. Clair hockey player. He played in the National Hockey League with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Tampa Bay Lightning, and New York Rangers. In 2003, he became the first Upper St. Clair and Pittsburgh-born and trained player to suit up for the Penguins in an NHL game. Malone’s number is retired and his banner hangs at Ice Castle Arena, home of the Upper St. Clair Panthers.

Thank you Ryan Malone for being a part of the Upper St. Clair hockey and its rich history and culture in the Pittsburgh area.

Upper St. Clair Hockey Fun Facts

In 1977 - 1978 there was a dispute between Western PA and Eastern PA HS hockey so the state championships were canceled. USC made it to the city finals by beating Richland in a 6 OT game. The finals were actually played over 2 games at the Civic Arena. The total goal count across the two games at the Civic Arena determined the city champion. The USC team would have made the state championship that year if they were conducted!

In 2020 the Upper St. Clair Varsity qualified for the 2020 Chipotle USA Hockey National Championships in Mansfield, Texas. However, all USA Hockey Nationals were canceled due to the coronavirus.

CJ Murray is a former forward, former coach, and former captain of the Upper St. Clair Panthers. He also won a Pennsylvania State Championship in 2011. The NHL Officials website states, after Murray graduated from college he decided to pursue officiating. He was later invited to the 2019 NHL Exposure Combine. Following the camp, he was asked to be a linesman in the AHL and he joined USA Hockey's Officials Development Program. In 2022, he was promoted to full-time NHL status.
